Well, what can I say about our
Governor General (GG) Designate that has not already been said? First off, I think that
Andrew Coyne in the
National Post and on his own blog has made the case, not against Ms. Jean but rather against Paul Martin's decision to name her GG, the most strong.
I am in complete agreement with him on this topic. However, what I want to comment on here is the relationship between Ms. Jean and the Liberal Party of Canada throughout the last two years. First we had the Prime Minister's office defending Ms. Jean, when a simple statement would have put to rest most concerns. We then had the PM call Mr. Harper and other leaders to ask them to not question his decision, that they were playing into the hands of those would would like to see Québec seperate from the rest of Canada.
Finally, after too many questions were being asked, the PMO and the Liberals issue Ms. Jean's statement. Sadly enough, as
ALW quickly pointed out, her Press Release, for a period of unknown time was listed on their website, before it appeared on her own...
I am suppose to take it that should there be another vote in the House of Commons that may require her involvment to either dissolve or take an active role, that she would side against the Liberals in favour of Mr. Harper's party? Can I really expect her to be non-partisan? I think not... It sad to see the office of the GG being used as such a political office. I must say, where are persons of
Lord Byng's quality (the bright lights at the PMO might be interested in the first line there...the part about Lord Byng being well known before he was named GG)?
On the lighter side the
Oracle of Ottawa a rather interesting blog-style site had this interesting
flash page to make light of everyone's favourite Liberal,
Scott Reid, comments on how the Prime Minister selects a GG.
